About the role

The Therapeutic Specialist role sits under the Senior Practice Lead within the National Centre for Practice Excellence team.  The Therapeutic Specialist will lead through influence – intentionally and purposefully coaching and building capacity of staff and carers across Tasmanian Child, Youth & Family (Tas CYF) teams to ensure that we are delivering consistent, high quality, evidence-based care for children and young people with complex and high needs.

As a Therapeutic Specialist you will provide on the ground therapeutic support, reflective practice and practice based coaching for children and young people in our care, as well as their carers and staff/care teams with our Tas CYF programs – including Family Based Care, Residential Care, Mentoring, Placement Preservation and Mental Health.

The Therapeutic Specialist role also provides active support around We Put Children First, CARE and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), as well as supporting consistent practice, building a positive culture, facilitating Communities of Practices (COPs) and other areas of practice development as required by the Tasmanian leadership team.

This permanent full-time position offers the flexibility to be based in based in Hobart with the option to work from both home and office environments, ensuring a balanced approach to professional and personal life.

Please note regular of travel to clients and carers in your caseload is required so the successful applicant must be happy to travel. Vehicle allowance provided (in lieu of Tool of Trade Vehicle)

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of national and regional projects by providing intentional and purposeful practice support and practice based coaching to all Tas Child, Youth and Family programs (Tas CYF).
  • Provide evidence informed training and support for carers and staff regarding therapeutic support, understanding and minimising negative impacts of trauma, promoting healthy age-appropriate development and building and strengthening skills and competency.
  • Support implementation, maintenance and monitoring of We Put Children First, Creating Conditions for Change (CARE) and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) 
  • Assessments and reviews as needed to best support the ongoing needs of Children & Young People e.g. Behaviour Support/Individual Crisis Support Plans
  • Provide expertise and support to Child & Family Practitioners and House Managers in the formulation and ongoing management of Care Plans, and to ensure purposeful supports are provided in line with CARE principals
  • Support teams around preventative strategies to ensure continuity of care and mitigate placement breakdowns
  • Advocate on behalf of Children & Young People by engaging agencies and organisations to support consistent therapeutic practice
  • Assist in reviewing client matching, contribute to intake assessment and support the transition of Children & Young People into homes

Skills & Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Mental Health Nursing or other related discipline. 
  • Current registration or eligibility for registration with the professional body relevant to your qualification. 
  • Completed, currently completing or agreement to undertake a unit of learning consistent with nationally recognised competency CHCDIS016 – Develop and promote position person-centred behaviour supports. 
  • Demonstrated experience in working with children or young people in out of home care who have experienced trauma, abuse and/or neglect
  • Ability to develop and promote positive person-centred behaviour supports
  • Strong understanding of the impact of trauma and complex behaviours
  • Current Driver’s Licence

Successful candidates will be required to clear probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check and Working with Children Check.
