About the role
The role of Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) located at Greenwich Hospital Palliative Care Unit, works within the Mission and Mission in Action of HammondCare to use skills and knowledge in leadership, management and clinical practice in consultation with a multidisciplinary team to achieve optimal health in a patient-focused service. You will be joining a high-performing and passionate team that truly believes in a patient-centric approach to care.
Essence of the role:
- The NUM takes overall responsibility for the standard of care in the unit.
- The NUM oversees the unit, team and all aspects of the healthcare environment.
- The NUM takes overall responsibility for the standard of nursing care and clinical practice that are evidence-based and reflect current practice.
- The NUM is pivotal to the coordination of patient care, unit management and leadership of the professions of nursing to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care and efficient use of resources.
- The NUM is a clinical role model for all nurses working on the unit.
- The NUM will manage feedback and critical incidents related to the service in consultation with key stakeholders.
- The NUM will facilitate patient flow to ensure timely admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
- The NUM will actively participate in the development and maintenance of professional and clinical standards of practice for the unit.
- The NUM will act as a clinical resource person by assisting, advising, and supporting all staff and students in all aspects of the performance of their duties.
- The NUM will actively participate in strategic and business planning for their service.
- The NUM will use resources wisely and participate in budget planning, monitoring, and reporting of unit financial status.
Key Responsibilities
- Roster management that provides an appropriate number and skill mix of nursing staff.
- Ensures that appropriate equipment is available.
- Manages and reports unit financial performance against allocated budget.
- Identifies deviance from budget and implements strategies to rectify.
- Establish structures and processes that enable strategic planning for all members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Creates opportunities to develop critical thinking skills within the multidisciplinary team.
- Provides opportunities for others to be innovative.
- Supports decision-making using evidence and best practice.
- Enables others to problem solve for themselves or as part of the team.
- Facilitates unit meetings for all members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Uses and responds, in a timely manner, to patient and carer feedback to develop and improve services.
- Provides feedback to all staff that informs them of unit performance.
- Establishes key performance indicators for the unit and encourages benchmarking with similar units internally and externally to the organisation.
- Encourages staff to seek out learning and development opportunities internal and external to the organisation.
- Ensures key stakeholders are informed about safe practices in the unit.
- Role models behaviour and communication styles that value key stakeholders.
- Ensures professional registration for self and all staff in the unit is current.
- Maintains own professional development and current knowledge of clinical specialty and management practices.
Essential/Mandatory criteria:
- Commitment to engage and align with HammondCare’s Christian Mission, Motivation and Mission in Action.
- NSW Registered Nurse – List A
- Relevant clinical and management experience
- Tertiary qualifications in management or relevant work experience or combination of study and work experience
- Knowledge of the management and delivery of health care services
- Demonstrated understanding of Work Health Safety issues and Equal Employment Opportunity
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate clinical services and manage change
- Experience managing a team of skilled professionals.
- A current driver’s license and safe driving record. Willingness to travel between HammondCare’s sites and services.
- Strong administrative and computer skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Empathy and patience.
